Eva W. Mack Cocktail Reception
April 7 @ 6:00 pm
The Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach and Treasure Coast announces the inaugural Eva W. Mack Cocktail Reception. This year’s event honors the Life and Legacy of John H. Swain Jr., who passed away last year at the age of 96. Swain is remembered for his numerous contributions to the community, and as a long time Board Member and supporter of the Sickle Cell Foundation.
John H. Swain Jr. was a tireless promoter of the non-profit organization. He shared his love and passion for the cause with everyone he knew. He always called the board a “working board”, stating the group was tasked with doing whatever it took to support the families carrying the burden of Sickle Cell Disease.
Eva W. Mack, a former teacher and entrepreneur, created the Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach in the late 1970’s, to improve the quality of life for families coping with Sickle Cell Disease. Until her death in 1998, Mrs. Mack, who went on to be elected West Palm Beach’s first black mayor, worked hard to ensure the organization became the leader in teaching about the global disease, helping people learn to live with it on a daily basis. The annual fundraiser in her name, spotlights corporate contributors supporting the foundation.
Corporate Sponsors for this Year’s event include Flagler Realty & Development, Shutts and Bowen Attorneys at Law, among others.
Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that is often characterized by extreme episodes of pain. Red blood cells become stiff and sticky, causing them to block blood flow and break down inside the blood vessels. This creates blocks, which may prevent organs from getting oxygen they need. This can lead to organ failure. In the United States, the condition disproportionally affects the African American population.
“The Eva W. Mack Cocktail Reception is an opportunity for people to come together in Fellowship to learn more about Sickle Cell, and our community’s needs.” Said CEO Shalonda Warren. “It will be a good time, for a great cause.”
The Eva W. Mack Cocktail Reception is being hosted at the Manatee Lagoon Discovery Center in West Palm Beach, Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 6:00 pm. Tickets are still available. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach and Treasure Coast. For more information, or to purchase tickets, go to www.sicklecellpbc.org. Or call 561-833-3113.
