Science On Tap – “Talking Trash: Waste Reduction Within the Human Ecosystem”

Crack open a cool one and flaunt your inner science geek during this year’s in-person “Science on Tap” series, presented by the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. On Thursday, September 16 at 7 p.m. the popular “age 21-and-up” series kicks off by welcoming attendees to build their sustainability acumen over beer and bites at Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach.  Anita Závodská, an Associate Professor at Barry University, will be the speaker and present “Talking Trash: Waste Reduction Within the Human Ecosystem” to educate visitors on how they can be agents of change in today’s world.

“Modeled after ‘Science Cafes,’ Science on Tap is the only place in Palm Beach County where for the price of a cup of coffee, a quality craft beer, or a glass of wine, anyone can come to discuss the latest trends in science and technology with a world-class scientist,” said Kate Arrizza, SFSCA President & CEO. “With the motto to ‘drink up – get smart,’ you know you are in for a casual-education session, as the goal of the program is for guests to have fun while learning a little bit more about everyday curiosities. For this ‘comeback’ season, we’re partnering with The Thompson Earth Systems Institute (TESI,) whose mission is to advance communication and education of Earth systems science in a way that inspires Floridians to be effective stewards of our planet. The Science on Tap sessions will all be perfect tie-in to our upcoming traveling exhibit, Earth Matters” 

Závodská brings a wealth of knowledge from teaching her courses in environmental science and climate change. Additionally, she is a trained garbologist and conducts international municipal solid waste research with ranging interests in sustainability, environmental education, waste management and recycling and adult education.

Science on Tap events will continue at Due South on November 18, 2021: Mangroves and Salt Marshes; January 20, 2022: Seagrasses; and March 24, 2022: Coral Reefs. Admission is always free. Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early to grab a drink and a seat. Presentations start at 7 p.m. and run for 30 minutes, followed by Q&A. Guests can win prizes like tickets to the Science Center during a pre-show trivia session at 6:45 p.m. Beverages are available for purchase, provided by the venue. While masks are not required at Due South, they are recommended while guests are not seated at a table. All tables will also be spaced six-feet apart.

The South Florida Science Center’s indoor/outdoor venue features more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a 10,000-gallon fresh and saltwater aquarium, digital planetarium, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” 18-hole conservation-themed Mini Golf Course and quarter mile long outdoor science trail. The newest addition includes a $2.5 million permanent exhibit, “Journey Through the Human Brain” and features the most advanced neuroscience research and technology in the world.
